Chapter Three

Nothing was going the way Trent planned. Not only did he not get a chance to call his ex, or anyone else for that matter, but he was being forced to do something he swore he would never do—help a kidnapper get his way. It was all fine and good for the American government to say they didn’t negotiate with kidnappers, especially when it was adults they abducted. But when it was one’s own daughter?

Somehow, they had this planned out extraordinarily well. When Trent arrived home, there was another masked man already waiting in his living room. While he couldn’t be sure, he thought it was a different person from the one who bumped into him at the grocery store, as well as different from the one he spoke to on the phone. This man was short and stocky, while the man from the phone was tall and thin. The man in the grocery store seemed average and rather easy to forget.

Trent had to stop himself from throttling the man standing in his living room just staring at him. On any other day, he would have thought the intruder was your ordinary house thief. But on this day? He knew it was just one more person in this cockamamie scheme. One he still didn’t understand. “What?”

The door closed on its own behind Trent who stood in the doorway glaring at the man wearing all black, along with a black ski mask. It was too cliché to be real. If he hadn’t spoken to his daughter, he would have thought he was being punk’d. But this wasn’t a reality TV show trying to pull one over on him. This was real.

“I’m here to make sure you follow the rules.” The man had a deep voice, but it wasn’t indistinct from any he’d heard in the area. Which meant he was most likely a local, or from somewhere else in the Southwest.

Trent crossed his arms over his chest. “And what rules would those be?” No one had said anything to him besides the order to not call the police. It was all so sketchy at this point; he wouldn’t even know if he was breaking a rule. Other than the police one.

The man took an intimidating step toward Trent and there was just enough opening in the eye slits to see him narrowing his dull, brown eyes. “To keep your trap shut and do exactly as you’re told.”

Anger boiled up within Trent and his arms flew out of their own volition. “Other than go home with no groceries, and don’t call the cops, I haven’t been told one daggone thing yet. What is going on? Where is my daughter and why do you have her?”

Without even realizing it, Trent had taken two steps closer to the man who was considerably shorter than himself. He knew from past experiences that anyone else would have been intimidated by his move. But not this guy.

In fact, the intruder took two steps of his own closer.
